About the event

Join Denise Zubizarreta, M.A.L.C.M. (c), as she presents her paper, Decolonizing Identity and Legacy through Colonial Stockholm Syndrome in Puerto Rico and Cuba, at the Midwest Art History Society Annual Conference in Denver.

This compelling presentation delves into the dual role of Early Modern art and architecture in Puerto Rico and Cuba, examining how these cultural artifacts reflected Spanish colonial dominance while simultaneously resisting it. Through the lens of Colonial Stockholm Syndrome (CSS)—a framework for understanding the internalization of imperial values—and creolization, Denise unpacks the complexities of identity formation in colonized societies.

The presentation will explore pivotal cultural works, including Spanish casta paintings, religious imagery like the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, and monumental structures such as Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Denise will demonstrate how these artistic and architectural expressions served as tools of imperial control while also embodying subtle acts of defiance and transformation.
