In 2022, El Bohio Del Bohiti by Denise Zubizarreta debuted at the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, where it won the prestigious IDEA Award for its powerful exploration of cultural identity and ancestral heritage. This immersive installation introduced the Bohiti Tarot, a groundbreaking deck that reimagines figures from Puerto Rican and Cuban history as the tarot archetypes of the major arcana. The exhibition cast a spotlight on the often-overlooked Taino people and Puerto Rican political icons for independence, bringing their stories to life through art.
Through El Bohio Del Bohiti, Zubizarreta invites viewers to reconnect with hidden histories and reflect on the ongoing struggles for cultural and political recognition. The installation challenges colonial narratives and offers a visually stunning, spiritually engaging experience that weaves the past into a present-day dialogue of resistance and liberation.
