HIGH EXPECTATIONS
Project type
Immersive Installation
Date
Summer 2024
Location
BRDG Project Gallery
As part of the Hear/Say exhibition at the BRDG Project, sponsored by the University of Colorado School of Public Health, Denise “The Vamp DeVille” Zubizarreta unveiled High Expectations, an immersive weed wardrobe installation that merges humor with social commentary. Set in a conceptual clothing store, this installation focuses less on fashion trends and more on the evolving narrative surrounding cannabis.
Each t-shirt in the High Expectations collection features witty slogans designed to spark laughter while subtly introducing a critique of cannabis culture and the medical community’s conflicting perceptions. Zubizarreta playfully contrasts the front-facing slogans—lighthearted quips that appeal to a wide audience—with the serious medical data printed on the back, drawing attention to the often-overlooked facts of cannabis use.
Through this satirical collection, High Expectations highlights how society selectively dresses up narratives, especially around controversial topics like cannabis. This installation serves as both a visual and intellectual experience, blending humor with an underlying message about public perception, health, and cannabis wisdom.
